What Has Your Food Been Eating?

If you are what you eat.. you are also what your food has been eating...

You are also what you don't eat...

In this TedEx talk, Laurent Adamowicz, a former food industry executive and founder of Bon'App, a simple nutrition guidance mobile application that tells you what is in your food, talks about his revelation in the food industry.  Throughout the video, he makes valid points on how the general public is unaware or lacking the resources to be educated on the intricacies of the vast food system.  As a result, today, obesity is considered by the American Medical Association as a disease.  Over time, more and more Americans are consuming more processed foods that more often than not lead to chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and most importantly diabetes.  The root of the problem, as Laurent describes, is what your food has been eating.  He mentions the difference between the farm raised trout (bigger, and genetically modified to fit in with the consuming patterns of Americans today) and the wild trout (richer in omega 3 fatty acids, yet smaller).

In Berkeley, there is an abundant of local produce around. Students are able to go to the local Safeway or Trader Joe's to grocery shop, or even the Berkeley Bowl, with its vast assortment of fresh produce supplied by local farmers.  In addition to grocery shopping, students are able to grab food at any corner, and it seems like any cuisine around is only a short distance's walk or drive.

In other communities, mainly food deserts, these resources we take for granted are often lacking.  So as Laurent says, "you are also what you don't eat."  People living in food deserts do not have the resources or knowledge available to pursue the healthy lifestyle to Laurent has explained (You are also what you don't eat).

Nutrition is at the forefront of preventative medicine, yet most people, including myself, do not know exactly what is going into my food. I am currently working to reach out to college students to utilize Bon'App.  This simple app is looking to educate the public, mainly college students, what exactly is in our food by breaking down the nutrition facts in simple terms.
